There has been a lot of rhetoric in the media lately concerning the marginalization of BIPOC voices and other historically marginalized groups. While I think that they do have some legitimate concerns I feel as if the opposition is being silenced. It is evident that in order to prop up groups they feel are being marginalized, they have begun to suppress anyone that doesn’t agree with a particular narrative, mainly conservatives.
Conservatives all across Canada and the United States are being silenced because they dare to have a different opinion, I know this because I am one. I have been terrified to speak out about the issues that are important to me because of fear of harassment. My fears became a reality when I shared my thoughts on Instagram about Black Lives Matter and the death of George Floyd. I got lambasted. People I didn’t even know came out of the woodwork and called me an Uncle Tom, whitewashed, a white woman, the N-word, and that I was a disgrace to black people.
To make matters worse, A lot of these remarks were aimed at me by other black people who were supposedly just trying to uplift black voices. It seemed as if they wanted to uplift black voices, but only the black people that they agreed with. Whenever I said something, I was immediately silenced. People completely invalidated my experiences and told me that I didn’t know what it was like to black even though I’ve been black my whole life. I lost friends over my beliefs, people that have known me for years somehow decided that it wasn’t just my ideas that were bad but that I was bad.
I am part of a Facebook group with other conservatives and time and time again I see posts about how scared people are to speak out in fear of losing their jobs and their friends and how grateful they are that there is a place where they can finally be themselves. Conservatives get absolutely villainized online by liberals who state that we are horrible and undeserving of even common decency.
We couldn’t comfortably use sites like Instagram and twitter that we had to create our own app, Parler, where we could freely discuss without being called a racist, a sexist, a bigot, or a xenophone among other things. I have to be extremely careful of any news I read because it almost always has a liberal bias and is the main reason why I no longer trust anything I read in the news nor any news story that trends on social media.
Many TV shows and movies are constantly trying to push a liberal agenda. Many articles that I tried to find on this are, of course, left-leaning. One author I read confirms the liberal bias but then spins it into a good thing. She disgustingly states that showing in movies how “racism is bad” is a liberal idea, as if conservatives want to be racist. Even academia isn’t safe, almost all professors are liberals and almost every class that I have
taken has been littered with a social justice agenda which seriously undermines any credibility that they have as they are not able to teach objectively. Many professors even self identify as either radicals, activists, or even Marxists, with the number of conservative professors dwindling down to almost nothing.
We have seen in sports how NBA players can plaster Black Lives Matter on their jerseys and kneel during the national anthem but anyone that wants to stand for whatever reason gets villainized. Their list of preapproved slogans for their players is as to be expected. According to the NBA, racism against black people is deplorable, which it is, but racism against white people is perfectly justified. During a recent game, LA Clippers’ Harrell called Dallas Mavericks’ Doncic a “bitch ass white boy”. Their reaction to this is as expected, we have heard nothing addressing this. Imagine the outcry if this was the other way around. Not only do they silence opposing voices, they are also hypocrites.
Just recently the tire company Goodyear was in hot water because their company policy allowed employees to display support of “black lives matter” and to don support for “lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender pride” but not “blue lives matter” or “make America great again”. It wasn’t until Trump announced that he would change the tires from his limousine from Goodyear to another tire company, resulting in lost sales, that they backtracked and allowed support for all political displays.
I, and many others, are constantly on guard because of our beliefs. Our values get attacked left, right, and center. I have become afraid to say anything in fear that I will lose even more friends than I have already lost. How is this in any way fair? How can you say you support uplifting marginalized groups but then demonize an entire group of people in the process? Liberal bias has seeped into every part of life and to think that people that hold liberal values are being marginalized is simply untrue. A group that is being pushed to the forefront of all facets of life is not a marginalized group. In actuality, it is conservative ideals that are being silenced on all fronts.
